Knee pain has a way of making you feel old and fragile. It’s easy to catch yourself thinking, “if I take one wrong step, my knee will buckle and that will be the end of it.” Which can lead to, “I can’t run anymore because of my bum knee.” now the pain has a face and persona all its own. I’ve been there! I was frustrated that the things I used to love doing were spoiled by the certainty of this knee pain. UNTIL…
I took the time to focus on treating myself. It started with some functional movements to see which gave me pain and which ones didn’t. I even videoed myself doing the exercises and was pretty shocked at the difference in movement from side to side! I checked how my hips and feet were able to move and function. I picked the biggest deficit and went after it. I started treatment with dry needling and isometrics and have already seen improvement after just a few sessions! I’m not back to 100% yet, that’s for sure but I’m much better than I was before. What’s more is that I have the confidence that my knee isn’t going to ALWAYS give me pain. Here are a few exercises that I did to help take care of my knee and get me back to running. Keep in mind that these are not the end all be all. It’s important to get evaluated at Endura Chiropractic to see which treatment approach is best for you!
Here’s what I did to help fix my knee pain:
3 dry needling session
Soleus Isometrics
Knee pain is not always straightforward. When we've ruled out that overuse or injury do not play a role in your dysfunction, that means that the problem usually isn't coming from the knee.
Here are a few causes of knee pain that aren’t coming from the knee:
Low back joint blockage and irritation
Disc bulge or herniation
Sciatic Nerve Entrapment
Femoral Nerve Entrapment
Calf Strain
Trigger Point Referral
Treatment varies for these different causes of pain and dysfunction. Without having a good diagnosis, treatment can create more frustration and feel like you’re just throwing spaghetti against a wall hoping that it’s going to stick. It’s very likely that you have a different story and training life that warrants its own attention and will help lead to an accurate diagnosis, and an accurate treatment.
